How do I become a DJ/ radio person?
What major do I need? Broadcasting? What is the best college for it? This is my dream. I finishing my first year at a community college doing my gen-ed courses. Also how much does a DJ or radio spokesman make on average? How about for Radio Disney?
Most make very low wages…small market DJ’s rarely make over 30K. A good communications college is helpful, like Emerson in Boston.

David Sarnoff: General Of Broadcasting $1.79 Biographical profile of one of the titans of American broadcasting, David Sarnoff, a pioneer in the field of radio and television who founded the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) and established a telecommunications and consumer electronics giant Radio Corporation of America (RCA). He ushered in the world of commercial radio and was instrumental in the evolution of television, dueling with Philo Farnsworth, Vladimir Zworykin and other inventors for the right to be called the father of television–and he won–although he was not an inventor or scientist. The New York Times called him "a man of astounding vision who was able to see with remarkable clarity the possibilities of harnessing the electron." Commissioned during World War II as a brigadier general, Sarnoff exercised considerable control on the nation's media. Award-winning author Daniel Alef tells the story of a driven, complex man who could match each of his goals with unquestionable success. [1,324-word Titans of Fortune Article] |

William S. Paley: Godfather Of Broadcasting $1.89 In 1928 William Paley, son of one of the nation's largest cigar producers, purchased United Independent Broadcasters Inc., a collection of 16 radio stations. He renamed it the Columbia Broadcasting System and built it into one of the nation's largest radio networks before turning to television. Although NBC had the largest networks, Paley focused on providing his stations, first for radio and subsequently for television, with unique programming and top talent. He turned to public affairs, giving news his support and brining in some of the nation's foremost newscasters from Edward R. Murrow to Eric Sevareid and Howard K. Smith. Paley also went after the best performers, raiding NBC's stable of stars while assembling a cast of the nations top talent including Bing Crosby, Jack Benny, Al Jolson, George Burns & Gracie Allen, and Kate Smith. And he was a risk taker, airing Orson Wells's "The War of the Worlds," and doing it so well that many people believed Martians had invaded the planet. As CBS's despotic patriarch, Paley became fabulously wealthy by insuring that his "Tiffany Network" helped determine what the nation first heard and saw at home every night. Award-winning author Daniel Alef brings to life the story of one of America's broadcasting giants. [1,313-word Titans of Fortune article] |

Thanks Johnners: An Affectionate Tribute to a Broadcasting Legend $27.59 Jonathan Agnew known to his legions of Test Match Special fans as "Aggers" has at long last written a personal tribute to his late colleague Brian Johnston universally known as "Johnners" The on-air incident in which Agnews comment on Ian Bothams attempt to avoid stepping on his stumps – "He just couldnt quite get his leg over" – provoked prolonged fits of giggles notably from Johnners and was voted in a BBC poll as "the greatest piece of sporting commentary ever" by 75% of those who responded. It is said that traffic on British motorways came to a complete standstill as commuters were forced to stop their cars due to fits of laughter while listening to it on Radio Four. This book is an affectionate account of a four-year friendship including copious anecdotes from their time together in the commentary box and during their travels overseas. Jonathan Agnew comments: "Brian Johnston was a tremendous influence on my early years at Test Match Special. His wit warmth and great sense of fun was not only a feature of his cricket commentary but also in the way he lived his life. Our friendship has been immortalised through the leg over incident but there was a much deeper bond between us than merely that hilarious broadcasting classic and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share this with cricket lovers everywhere." Aggers on Johnners is the holy grail of cricket books a must-have for anyone who loves the noble game. Summers Will Never Be the Same a collection of tributes to Johnners published shortly after his death in 1994 sold 80 000 copies in hardcover. |

Color Radio $7.99 Don Masters found a girl and a career at almost the same time. At times, it was as difficult to manage one as it was the other. But as time went on, the excitement of working in top-40 radio led to him developing a love for broadcasting that took him in a new direction, and led to romance with two young women, one whose intellect and wit seemed a perfect match for his own, and another, whose appeal was more down-to-earth and physical. It all happened a long time ago, but some things never change, not in the larger sense. |
