High Tide: News From A Warming World $15.19 The No Logo of climate change – a book that shows how global warming is not a theory we should still debate but something that has already happened on a global scale. Climate change is not a concern for the future. Its happening right now. In this book – based on the latest scientific evidence – the author takes us around the world to show the impact of global warming already being felt in peoples lives. From sand-buried houses in China to thawing Alaskan plains the author witnesses some of the worst effects of climate change at first hand. Some like the floods in the UK are near home. Others – like the drowning Pacific island of Tuvalu – are a world away from the exhaust pipes and factory chimneys that are actually causing global warming. But this isnt simply an inventory of disaster its a wry look at how people around the globe are coping as their world changes at unprecedented speed. In the process the author eats whale blubber in Alaska swims in shark-infested waters off the Great Barrier Reef and struggles to the top of Andean peaks in Peru. An adventure with a conscience and an argument with an urgent purpose High Tide is an extremely important book. |

The Latest Answers to the Oldest Questions: A Philosophical Adventure with the World’s Greatest Thinkers $8.59 The work of the classic philosophers is well known. But what do contemporary thinkers say about what it is to be a human being? In his serious, challenging, and remarkably accessible new book, Nicholas Fearn turns to contemporary philosophers to ask the age old questions: Who am I? What do I know? What should I do? In his search for higher meaning, Fearn consults with thinkers from around the world (including John Searle, Martha Nussbaum, Peter Singer, Richard Rorty, Daniel Dennett, Noam Chomsky, Derek Parfit, Nick Bostrom, among many others) to create an impressive survey of recent thought. Variously, they believe that free will, identity, and consciousness are not what they seem; that the difference between virtue and wickedness can be a matter of sheer luck; and that, one day, we will all be vegetarians. Fearn discovers that the topics haven’t changed, though our world has. Or has it? Moving deftly from pop culture to the writings of Plato, Philosophy is a brilliant and entertaining guide to the current state of the philosophical thought. |
